Online Shopping Booms in Australia

Online shopping has unsurprisingly boomed in Australia since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic however the scale of the growth is still a surprise. Research from Australia Post has shown that Aussies spend over $50 billion shopping online last year which is the biggest on record.
In terms of numbers, 9 million Australians households shopped online last year. This number represents approximately 82 per cent of the total number of households in Australia.
Australia Post’s report also broke down online shopping habits by suburb. It found that Victoria had the to five suburbs for online shopping in the Country, most likely because they have been lockdown the longest. The five suburbs in Victoria that recorded the highest online shopping numbers were Point Cook, Cranbourne, Hoppers Crossing, Craigieburn and Doreen. These five suburbs were determined to have shopped online over twice the amount of times they did in 2019. Amazingly, 90% off the households in these suburbs shopped online during the year.
Rounding out the top 10 in online shopping suburbs was Toowomba in Queensland, Liverpool and Rouse Hill in New South Wales, Ballarat in Victoria and finally Gosford in New South Wales.
Many people that shopped online were new to online shopping and were forced to due to lock downs and restrictions. Fashion was the category that attracted the most online shoppers.
